An Afternoon at Green Team

by Beatrice

The Reduce, No Excuse club (or Green Team) is an ECA at St. George’s that meets every Thursday after school with Ms. Gallimore, our Green Queen. The Green Team does a lot of things but every week, we start off with recycling (it isn’t just magic that the bins in each classroom get emptied each week). After recycling, we usually have a meeting where we talk about the things that we want to do to make the school greener.
Last year, we reduced the size of late slips (they are now half the size of what they used to be) and we applied for a grant from Metro for $1000 and we got it. With this money, we installed a bike rack behind the school. We also started to work on getting water bottles off our campus and succeeded in getting them out of board meetings. This year we have a lot of goals and most of them are getting accomplished. We have done some paper audits on teachers to try to make them more aware of how many sheets they hand out and how they could improve. We also got some more money from grants, which we plan on using to get better water fountains installed at school. This will help with getting water bottles out of our school because if there is cold water on every floor from fountains then fewer people will buy water. One of our long term goals is to get a dishwasher.
So, if you want to have fun and make a difference in our school, it’s not too late to join!
